Brief History
Associated Surveyors Co. Ltd (ASL) is an emanation of a partnership set up in 1983 under the name of Associated Surveyors between late Captain Yves BETUEL and Captain Jean Pierre RAULT.
The former was at the time the managing director of Taylor Smith Dry Docks which had been the only shipyard in operation in Mauritius for more than a century, while the latter had freshly completed a sea career in the British and Mauritian merchant navies culminating with 4 years’ command of cargo/passenger and mid-size general cargo vessels trading worldwide.
Upon the retirement of Captain Betuel in the late nineties and with a view to offering to the maritime community a wider range of services in terms of ship inspections, Mr Robert JULIEN, an experienced Chief Engineer joined ASL and is to date a co-director of the company with Captain Jean Pierre RAULT.
Over the years ASL, and in particular Captain Jean Pierre RAULT has received numerous accreditations, most notably by the majority of IACS members for whom he performed as Non-Exclusive surveyor and in the case of NKK and KR as the local agent as well. Captain Jean Pierre RAULT has also had the privilege to be for over 30 years the local flag state inspector of the Bahamas Maritime Authority. ASL has been and continues to be appointed by other flag states albeit on an ad-hoc basis.
With the adoption of maritime conventions by flag states the scope of vessel inspections has admittedly been enlarged over the decades, but the core of these inspections has remained concentrated around the inspection of a vessel’s Hull & Equipment and Machinery & Electrical equipment and of course the safety features associated with the safe operation of a ship.
What on the other hand seems to have evolved quite considerably over the years, at least in Mauritius, is the demand for quantity surveys. Hence, to adapt to these new opportunities, we have among our staff fully trained personnel to conduct Petroleum surveys, LPG surveys, Bunker Surveys and dry cargo quantity assessment through draft surveys or other means such as weighbridge measurements. A non-exhaustive list of services which ASL provides through its seasoned surveyors may be seen under “Services”. With the gradual emergence of Port Louis as a bunker stop-over port in this region of the world, ASL has in its ranks a fully trained and dynamic team of surveyors to conduct quality bunker surveys on behalf of charterers and shipowners alike. charterers and shipowners alike.
